The leather
Argentine cowhide worked in our workshop. Two finishes depending on the version: embossed, with a marked texture and a matte surface that takes the rub of daily use well; or smooth, with a restrained shine that draws an even patina on the flap and at the grip points. The edges are finished with stitched piping — that is what holds the outline in shape after years of opening and closing.
The build
Three-dial combination lock on the flap, which comes down covering the whole front. Rigid tubular handle, fixed to the body with metal hardware on each side. Detachable strap that clips onto the D-rings on the sides, for moving it to the shoulder when your hands are full. Stitched leather reinforcements at the bottom corners, which is where a briefcase rests and wears. Inside, three separate compartments, a pocket with a metal zip, an organiser with slots for cards and a pen, and a fabric lining throughout.
In use
40 cm wide, 25 cm high and 13 cm deep, 1.7 kg. Fits a 15-inch laptop with its charger and legal-size folders unfolded, and still leaves one compartment free. It is the briefcase for the meeting where the folder has to open on the table — not the one that sleeps on the desk.
Cowhide does not need looking after: it needs using.
