A 36-centimetre folder with almost no seams, no zips and no hardware in sight is a surface of leather and nothing else. That leaves the leather on its own: there is no construction detail for anyone to look at, so you look at the hide. Which is why the choice of hide matters.
The leather
Cowhide with a smooth, uncorrected finish. The natural veining and creases of the hide stay visible and run across the whole cover — they are not flaws, and they are not a finish applied on top: it is the pattern the animal grew, and no two folders carry the same one. It is the opposite of a grained leather, which evens the surface out and hides things. Here the decision was to show it.
The build
A single folded piece, with a stitch run around the perimeter and nothing more. It closes with a side tab that passes through a strap riveted at two points — no zip, no magnetic catch, no hooks: you slide the tab and it opens. Casa Lopez logo blind-embossed at the bottom, the only thing interrupting the surface.
In use
25 cm wide, 36 cm high and 5 cm deep, 300 grams. It takes A4 sheets unfolded and with room to spare — four centimetres across and six in height, so they go in and out without catching or scuffing at the edge. This is the folder for carrying papers from one meeting to the next, or for keeping them somewhere they will not crease.
With nothing to decorate it, the folder is the leather. Better that it be one worth looking at.
