A passport is twelve and a half centimetres tall. This holder is twenty-one. The eight and a half left over are not spare: they are what a boarding pass needs to go in whole, without being folded in four and without sticking out of the top. That is what it is measured for.
The leather
Smooth cowhide, matte and even, and thin: two centimetres of spine for everything it holds. On something that lives in an inside jacket pocket, or in your hand in a queue, smooth is the finish that catches least and wipes clean in one pass.
The build
It opens like a book. On the left panel, the passport slot, its top edge cut on a diagonal so you can lift the passport out with one finger, and a horizontal pocket underneath for loose papers. On the right, five stepped card slots and an inside pocket. It closes with a leather tab that crosses the spine and fastens on a snap: there is no zip, so opening and closing it is a one-handed gesture.
In use
11 cm wide, 21 cm high and 2 cm deep. It takes the passport, the boarding pass unfolded, five cards in their slots, and the loose paperwork — insurance, receipts, the baggage tag — in the inside pocket. It goes in an inside jacket pocket or the front pocket of a backpack, and everything comes out together at the desk.
