Most pencil cases open through a slot: you put a hand in and search blind. On the Miami the zip runs the whole 28 cm and then turns down at the end, so the case opens right out and everything inside is visible in one go.
The leather
Smooth, matte Argentine cowhide, worked by hand in Buenos Aires. It is soft leather with no reinforcement and no interlining: the case takes the shape of what it carries and lies flat when emptied. The name is blind-embossed on the front, with no plate and no applique.
Because the leather is smooth and unlined, it marks: the edges take on a shine before the rest, and the top records the rub of whatever shares the bag with it. That is the difference from a fabric case, which gets dirty instead of ageing.
How it is made
A trapezoidal body — wider at the base than at the top — so it sits flat on a desk instead of rolling. The zip is metal, on tape matched to the leather, with the stitching left visible along the side and a leather pull at the end. The ends are curved and stitched from the inside, with no raw edge to fray.
Living with it
28 cm long, 9 high and 4 deep, 150 grams. The length is what makes it useful beyond a desk: pencils and pens lie flat without bending, but so do make-up brushes, a charger and its cable, a pair of glasses, or travel cutlery. Empty, it takes up the space of an envelope.
It is also among the hardest gifts to get wrong: no size, no gender, and it ends up being used for something different in every house.
