The Versalles is a half moon: twice as wide as it is high, with a straight base and the top edge in a single arc. Worn, the curve follows the line of the body; set down, it stands on its base more like an object than a bag.
The leather
Cowhide, smooth or embossed. In the smooth one the arc runs clean from end to end; in the embossed one the pattern pressed into the leather adds texture without changing the shape. In several colours the side gusset is a second tone, and that band is what draws the curve when you look at it in profile.
The build
Two half-circle faces joined by a seven-centimetre gusset. The zip runs the whole arc, from one end of the base to the other, so it opens along its length rather than through a hole at the top. At both ends, metal rings where the 130 cm strap clips on with snap hooks; the length is set with a buckle, and it comes off.
In use
44 cm wide, 22 cm high and 7 cm deep, 600 grams. The length is what sets it apart: an unfolded envelope of papers, a diary, a phone and a wallet go in, all lying lengthwise. With the long strap it is worn crossbody or over the shoulder; without it, under the arm.
