A 48-centimetre bag is usually luggage: you carry it by hand, set it down, pick it up again. The Richie comes with a padded shoulder pad — it is meant to be worn, loaded, through a long walk. That is the difference between a large bag and one you actually use.
The leather
Argentine cowhide with a smooth, polished finish. It is a leather that works: where the bag folds, the tone opens and lightens, and it comes back when released. With use it develops patina in the gusset folds and at the grip points, so two Richies from the same batch stop looking alike within a year. The edges are sealed and stitched point by point, not glued.
The build
Metal turn lock mounted on the strap that crosses the front, fixed with two rivets. Two tubular handles stitched to the body. Detachable strap with a padded shoulder pad, clipping onto the D-rings on the sides with solid snap hooks. Folded side gussets that give it shape when empty and give way when full. Flat base with a perimeter seam.
In use
48 cm wide, 36 cm high and 18 cm deep, 1.5 kg. Fits a laptop with the day's things and clothes for two nights, or a full kit for a workday out of the office. The turn lock asks for a deliberate gesture to open — it will not fall open resting on a car seat.
The shine of the first day is not the best it will have.
