Some handbags hold their shape only because of what is inside them: empty, they collapse and end up in a heap on the car seat. The Anais does not depend on that. The leather is thick, the base is firm and the gussets are folded rather than stitched flat — the shape belongs to the object, not to what you put in it.
The leather
Smooth-finish cowhide, of a thickness you notice when you pick it up. That is what lets it hold its volume with no internal frame and no plastic reinforcement: the structure is the leather itself. With use it takes patina on the handles and in the folds of the gussets, the two places where the hand and the movement work every day.
The build
Front flap crossed by a horizontal strap with a metal turn lock — you have to turn it to open, so it will not fall open with movement. Two tubular handles stitched to the body. Folded side gussets that give the thirteen centimetres of depth and give way when it is loaded. D-rings on the sides with snap hooks, to add a strap and wear it crossbody. Casa Lopez logo blind-embossed. Silver hardware.
In use
34 cm wide, 24 cm high and 13 cm deep, 2 kilos empty. It is thick leather and structure, and that is what keeps it in shape. Inside it takes a small laptop, a wallet, a toiletry bag and the day's things, all standing upright. It is carried by the handles, or crossbody once a strap is clipped on.
Empty it looks the same as full. That is what you are paying for.
