Almost every crossbody this size is an envelope: two layers of leather stitched at the sides, with no depth. Everything you put in ends up lying down and stacked, and getting anything out means digging. The Alison has seven centimetres of depth and a flat base, so things stand up and stay where you put them.
The leather
Grained cowhide, with a visible pore and a matte surface. It is a structural leather: it holds the rectangle even when the bag is empty, without sagging or bulging. And since it is worn crossbody, it rubs against a coat all day — grain takes that well, because it absorbs marks instead of displaying them.
The build
Rectangular body with rounded upper corners and a flat base. The zip does not just run along the top: it also comes down both sides, so the opening forms a U and the whole interior is visible at once. Long adjustable strap on a buckle, mounted on leather loops riveted to the body. Gold hardware, and a metal plate on the front carrying the name, instead of the blind embossing other models use.
In use
27 cm wide, 21 cm high and 7 cm deep, 500 grams. It takes a wallet upright, a phone, glasses in their case and a small notebook, without anything having to lie on its side. It is worn crossbody or over the shoulder depending on how the strap is set, and the flat base lets it stand where you put it down.
