Most handbags are flat: wide, shallow, and everything inside ends up stacked in layers. The Arequipa is built the other way round. It measures twenty centimetres across by fifteen deep — the footprint is almost square — so what you put in stands upright and loose, like a bucket rather than an envelope.
The leather
Cowhide in two finishes. The grained one has a visible pore and a matte surface, and it absorbs the rubbing of daily use instead of displaying it. The embossed one carries a reptile texture pressed into the same cowhide — it is not exotic skin: it is cowhide worked at the finish, with a sheen that sits on the raised parts and dies down in the hollows of the pattern.
The build
The body is made of four vertical panels that roll onto themselves and meet at the mouth — that is where the flared silhouette comes from, wider at the top than at the base. The mouth closes on a magnet: it snaps shut in one gesture, with no zip in sight. Short top handle, stitched to both sides. Long adjustable strap on a buckle, detachable: it hangs on snap hooks over D-rings, so it comes off whole and the bag goes back to the short handle. Silver hardware.
In use
20 cm wide, 17 cm high and 15 cm deep, 400 grams empty. It takes a wallet upright, a phone, glasses in their case, keys and a small toiletry bag, with nothing having to be stacked. What it will not take is an A4 folder or a tablet: twenty centimetres wide by seventeen high is the limit. Worn in the hand by the short handle, or crossbody on the long strap.
The size is that of a small handbag. The capacity is not.
