A bag ten centimetres deep is usually a slot: it opens a crack at the top and getting anything out means reaching in blind. The Constance solves that with its shape. The mouth is arched and the zip follows the curve all the way down both sides, so it opens right out and you see the whole interior at once.
The leather
Cowhide in three finishes. The grained one, with a fine even pore, is the one that holds the arch best and shows rubbing least. The embossed one carries the pattern pressed into the same leather, with relief but no extra weight. And the long-grain one has a stretched pore, more pronounced and more irregular: the liveliest of the three, and the one that changes most with use.
The build
Structured body with an arched mouth, the zip stitched along the curve and running down both sides almost to the base. Two tubular handles, held by a metal loop over a leather diamond stitched to the body — the diamond spreads the pull across a wide area, which is exactly where a handle ends up tearing away. The base carries a separate leather band stitched from side to side: that is what keeps it standing, and what stops the bottom sagging under weight.
In use
42 cm wide, 31 cm high and 10 cm deep, 900 grams empty. It takes an A4 folder upright, a 15-inch laptop, a wallet and the day's things, all in sight when you open it. The ten centimetres of depth are deliberate: they keep the profile slim and force what goes in to go in tidy rather than piled. Carried in the hand, or over the forearm.
The arch is not decoration: it is what lets it open all the way.
