There is a difference between a weekend bag and one that replaces the suitcase. The Paul is the second. Fifty-four centimetres wide in a soft body that settles into the trunk of a car, an overhead rack or the floor by your feet — where a rigid suitcase can only sit one way.
The leather
Argentine cowhide worked in our workshop. Depending on the version: hair-on, which leaves the natural fibre visible and means no two pieces are alike. Or embossed, with a marked texture and a matte surface that takes daily use well. Or smooth, which takes an even shine and develops patina at the grip points.
The build
Full-length metal zip along the opening, which opens the bag end to end. Two hand straps and one for carrying, to move it from the arm to the shoulder when the weight starts to tell — empty it weighs 2.1 kg, and full it makes itself felt. Inside, a zipped pocket of 35 × 26 cm for what must not move, and an open one of 50 × 16 cm running the full width, meant for flat things: a folder, a laptop, a newspaper.
In use
54 cm wide, 40 cm high and 30 cm deep. Fits clothes for three or four days with shoes and a toiletry bag, or a full kit for a long workday with room to spare. It is the bag for leaving on Thursday and coming back on Sunday without having touched a suitcase.
Travel does not spoil cowhide: it records on it.
