Eighteen centimetres across, which is what it takes for a banknote to lie flat. In an ordinary wallet it is folded in half, and that fold is what wears the paper out and bulks up the pocket.
The leather
Evenly tanned Argentine cowhide, worked thin: one centimetre thick with everything inside. It is the kind of piece that takes on marks, and in this format the wear shows on the edges before the faces — it becomes yours without coming apart.
How it is made
It opens like a book, in two leaves. The eight card slots are stepped along both sides, so the edge of each one shows and you pull out the one you want without emptying the rest. On the right leaf, a clear window for your ID, visible without taking it out. Behind, the note compartment runs the full length. Two more inner pockets for whatever has no place of its own.
Living with it
18 cm wide by 9 tall and 1 thick, 100 grams. This is a coat wallet, not a back-pocket one: the length makes it sit upright in an inside pocket. It takes Argentine notes and dollars alike. If you want something for a trouser pocket, the Eric and the Alban are bifolds and measure 11.
The note lies flat, and it shows.
