A portfolio with no handle is carried differently: under the arm, or by the loop on its side. That forces it to be what it is — flat, and wide enough for what a meeting needs rather than for a whole day. The John is 40 centimetres wide by 28 high, with seven of gusset: the laptop, a folder and not much else.
The leather
Cowhide in two finishes. The grained one, with a fine even pore, is the one that shows rubbing least — and on a portfolio carried under the arm, the rubbing is against a jacket every day. The long-grain one has a stretched pore, more pronounced and irregular: the one that changes most with use, and the first to show where you always take hold of it.
The build
Rectangular body with a seven-centimetre gusset at the sides and the base: it opens when loaded and lies flat when it is not. A zip runs side to side along the top edge, with a metal pull. On the right side, a leather loop to slip your hand through. And a curved seam crosses the base from side to side, like a wave — the only design gesture on a piece that is otherwise a clean surface, with the Casa Lopez name blind-embossed in the centre.
In use
40 cm wide, 28 cm high and 7 cm deep. A 15-inch laptop goes in with room to spare, and there is space beside it for a folder, a notebook and the cables. An A4 sheet goes in landscape: it is nearly two centimetres short of standing upright. Carried under the arm or by the side loop — there is no handle and no strap, and that is the point.
