The leather
Cowhide with a smooth finish, no pronounced grain — unlike the portfolios with handles. A smooth surface is more restrained and also more honest: it hides nothing, so over the years it collects the marks of use in plain sight. It is the kind of leather that looks better at three years than on day one.
The build
Horizontal rectangular body, only 5 cm deep. Angled zipper closure running the full top edge and down the side. A curved seam crosses the lower third, joining the base panel to the body — it is the only thing that breaks the surface, along with the applied Casa Lopez leather plate in the middle. Rounded corners on the zipper side. No handles, no strap, no outside pockets.
In use
40 cm wide, 30 cm high and 5 cm deep, 900 grams. An A4 folder fits lying flat with room to spare, and upright too — though upright it is flush, since an A4 measures 29.7 cm and the Hugo is 30 high. A laptop up to 15 inches also fits, though the Hugo has no padding: it is a document folder, not a sleeve. For meetings, signings and papers that have to arrive uncreased.
