A wallet that lives in a handbag has a problem a pocket wallet does not: nothing holds it shut. Loaded with cards it falls open, and what was inside ends up at the bottom, among the keys. The Shelly closes with a tab that crosses and snaps — you have to open it on purpose.
The leather
Argentine cowhide with a pronounced grain and a matte surface. On a piece that moves around loose and rubs against everything else, the grain is what hides wear: it absorbs the marks of use instead of displaying them, the opposite of what smooth leather does. The inside is leather too, so there is no synthetic lining to peel away at the edge of the slots.
The build
The tab comes off one of the covers, crosses the front and snaps shut over a strap stitched to the body. Inside, twelve card slots split between the faces and a fold-out panel, two full-length bill compartments and two flat pockets. The perimeter stitching runs in a contrasting tone, which is what draws the outline of the tab and makes it read as a designed piece rather than a patch.
In use
11 cm wide, 9 cm high and 3 cm thick, 100 grams — among the lightest in the range for the capacity it holds. Twelve slots cover bank cards, ID, an insurance card and loyalty cards, and the snap takes that load without the wallet springing open. It is the one you find by feel in a handbag and pull out closed.
It opens when you want it to, not when it fills up.
