The leather
Cowhide with a natural grain. On a backpack this size the leather works: the straps pull, the base carries and the flap folds in the same place every time. Over the months each of those areas marks differently, and that's the part nobody can manufacture.
How it's made
A tall body with a wide base and soft sides. The mouth closes with a leather drawstring running through loops; over it, a generous flap that catches on a tab. At the front, two pockets with their own flap and tab, one on each side. A rolled handle on top to lift it by hand. Adjustable leather shoulder straps with buckles, anchored to the body.
Living with it
25 cm wide, 35 high and 17 deep, 800 grams. The 17 of depth are what make the difference: clothes fit, not just paper. The drawstring closes the mouth even when it's full, and the front pockets are for what you need without taking it off your shoulder.
