A passport is twelve and a half centimetres tall. This holder is twenty-one. The eight and a half left over aren't excess: they're exactly what a boarding pass needs to fit whole, without folding it in four and without it poking out the top. It was measured for that.
The leather
Smooth cowhide, matte and even, in a thin gauge: two centimetres of spine for everything it carries. In an object that lives in an inside jacket pocket, or in your hand while you queue, smooth leather is the one that snags least and wipes clean in a single pass.
How it's made
It opens like a book. On the left panel, the passport compartment, its top edge cut on a diagonal so you can lift the passport out with one finger, and below it a horizontal pocket for loose papers. On the right, five stepped card slots and an inner pocket. It closes with a leather flap that crosses the spine and snaps shut: no zip, so opening and closing it is a one-handed gesture.
Living with it
11 cm wide, 21 high and 2 deep. It takes the passport, the boarding pass unfolded, five cards in their slots and the loose papers — insurance, receipts, the baggage tag — in the inner pocket. It rides in an inside jacket pocket or the front pocket of a backpack, and everything comes out together at the desk.
